Memorial Day/H.E. "Speedy" Wilson Remembrance - A Toast to Speedy!

Observed on the last Monday in May, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance to honor and mourn the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.

During this time, our Detachment visits the grave of Medal of Honor recipient, Harold “Speedy” Wilson. One of Wilson’s last wishes was for the Detachment to come together at his grave the Saturday before Memorial Day, to share a cold beer with him and tell his story. “Many of us knew Speedy, and we made a promise to him that we would visit him and have a beer with him every year. We are so honored and proud to do this,” said retired Master Sergeant Beulah Scott, who is also the current Commandant of our Detachment.

After sharing a beer with Speedy Wilson, the Detachment members, along with the Scouts of America Troop 307, place American flags on all the graves of all Veterans located at Woodridge Memorial Park. If you would like to participate in our annual tradition or the placement of flags, the cemetery is located at the Woodridge Memorial Park off Corley Mill Road in Lexington.
